What are bicycle gears made of?

yea what are they made of, i mean the chain and the gears the chain is attached to.

it would be nice if you could give a link with answer.
online encyclopedia info is preffered but i coudnt find any so anything will do

btw normal everyday bikes no bmx/mountain bikes etc
 
It varys on the type of bike. BMX bikes are usually made of an alloy of steel and aluminum, whereas mountain bikes use pure steal and/or iron.
 
Sorry Prodigy, you earned a TD. There is no such thing as an alloy of aluminum and steel. In fact, steel IS an alloy by itself and cannot be successfully integrated with aluminum regardless of its content.

Most rear gears (cogs) are made of steel although there are some made from titanium or aluminum alloy. I know of one company that was toying with carbon fiber gears as well but don't think they were successful. Most front gears (chainrings) are also made from either aluminum alloy or steel.

Chains are almost invariably made with steel, but again, there are a couple of companies that make titanium chains as well.
