What are archaebacteria?

They were some of the first bacteria that appeared on earth, and they are known to be able to survive in what is normally considered "hostile" environments, such has very hot, salty, acidic geysers, etc. It is thought all life started with archaebacteria.

They can be producers and consumers, depending on the environment they live. Some can perform photosynthesis, and some feed within their environment.
