I made a mistake today. I started rewatching Kare Kano (His and Her Circumstances). I first saw it years ago, it was one of the first fansubs I ever traded for. Still have the VHS tapes somewhere. I thought it was totally and completely brilliant, and it's almost certainly one of the select anime that turned me into the fan of the medium.
Now, watching it again, I'm realizing how amazing it still is. It's clever and unique, and just oozes style. The dialogue is wonderful, the way it merges still art with animation is gorgeous, and the voice acting is perfect. Unfortunately, the flip side is that it's made me aware of how lackluster most of the anime I've been watching lately really is. It's been a good while since a series really blew me away. I've become content with average, which is a shame.
Yeah, even after all this time, Kare Kano is one of the best anime I've ever seen.
