What advantages are there to putting "clear contact paper" on the outer covers of paperback books?

is it really mostly to make the book last longer or more to just to keep it "clean and neat"?

will the contact paper really make the book last longer if it is a paper back? isnt it the BINDING that really determines how long a book lasts?

please explain what you can....why some might think it a waste of time and a stupid idea?
