wghen the roman civilization collapsed?

The 1,000 years (actually about 1,100 or more) between the fall of the western Roman Empire and the beginnings of modern astronomy (in the 16th and 17th centuries) included the entire medieval period (Middle Ages) and the early modern period. The latter began with Columbus in 1492, so it was underway for a century or more before good progress in astronomy got underway.
