Western Civilization question?

Do you think slavery was ended for economic reasons or do you believe the push of the abolition movement led to the end of slavery. This is around the 1800's

The Emancipation Proclamation administered by Abraham Lincoln was executed to break the economic back of the southern agricultural economy. The idea was to release the slaves forcing confederate soldiers to return home to take care of their cotton crops.

I wish we could say the slaves were freed because it was the right thing to do, but that simply isn't the case. The slaves were freed to put greater strain on the confederate army.

Slavery was ended as a by-product of Lincoln's election. Lincoln likely would have been like the previous presidents, in allowing slavery to continue as long as nobody did anything drastic (like secede from the Union). But the South didn't really give Lincoln a chance and instead chose to secede as soon as they could. Lincoln saw the opportunity in this and decided that he could end slavery once and for all with a quick decisive military campaign lasting about 4-6 months...and as we all know, things didn't go exactly according to plan. haha
