Were there merits to slavery that history has washed away?

And I mean this from the black culture perspective.

We have difficulty fathoming a caste system in America - but the whole planet bought into it for thousands of years. You were born into your class and people for the most part accepted it. So there's that simple reality.

But what I am really driving at is the enormous agricultural and economic service these men and women provided to our and their country. We respect and admire the steel workers, we respect the railroad workers, we honor our labor classes throughout history, unless you picked cotton in which case their contribution to our nation is overshadowed by this boogeyman nightmare rhetoric. I think it's unfair and in fact knee jerk racism!

The history books should be honoring the plantation workers of early America for the groundwork they layed to our prosperity. The legend of wicked evil slavemasters is just the more sensationalized story and overshadows this part of African American culture - which they have no reason to be ashamed of.

This labor force broke their backs to establish the foundation of America and we should honor them - not look away in shame.
A black man should be able to show pride in being a southerner!

Just my .02 cents.
Mike you were doing so good - but why'd you have to include the line about "having black friends" haven't you realized yet that's the white guy trying to be cool kiss of death?
whoa - you can't compare slavery to the Nazi genocide. That's absurd.

Please don't misunderstand me - slavery, heck any class system you are born into, is a medevil and immoral philosophy. I'm not supporting it.

I'm commenting on the reality of the situation and suggesting African Americans can make the argument they made this country what it is today in a major way.
