Were The Beatles the most talented songwriters in Rock history?

No. There music influenced music that was similar to theirs.

Metal
Rap
Classical
Ska
Reggae
Punk
Grunge

Didn't influence any of them directly, and yeah, they flirted with a few of those genres but those genres were already in full swing when they did that, therefore they didn't have a mass influence on it. And when I say didn't influence those genres, they may have influenced some of the artists under those genres, but did not influence the direct sound of it. No where near is influential as people would have you believe.
 
Or did their timing and rise to fame allow them to define Rock and set the standard for what good music should be?

Is the greatness of The Beatles from raw talent alone, or was it more circumstantial?
