get her pre-op blood tests? Heard before that you can get your dog pre-op blood tests which check to make sure she doesn't have problems which might make an operation unwise? Has anyone ever gotten these tests done for their dog prior to being spayed? What do the blood tests look for do you know? Thanks.

The pre-op bloodwork is to check liver and kidney function ... a dog's liver and kidneys must be healthy enough to metabolize and excrete the anesthesia.

Yes, you should certainly have them done. My vets don't even give the option of NOT having them done. Especially important for a small breed, too.

Since your dog is young, most likely her liver and kidneys are absolutely fine and she will tolerate the anesthesia and surgery with no complications, but it's still a good idea to have the bloodwork done.
 
In Uk most vet don't do pre-op blood test. If you want them done you can ask them to do them but they aren't really needed. It is just another way of some vets making more money from you. I have worked at a vets and had many pets over the years neutered and they have never been done just a regular health check on heart.
