As you know, the south voted, in bloc, Democrat for nearly a century. This bloc started to fracture when the national Democratic party and Harry Truman voiced support for Civil Rights reform.
The final straw was the CRA and VRA of 1964 and 65. Much to their credit, the large majority of both parties, excluding 'dem good ole suh-then boys (surprise, surprise) voted for it.
Then, Skyrd (I love their music, don't get me wrong) asked in their most famous song of all, "Watergate does not bother me. Does your conscious bother you?"
To me, this indicates the most notable and public shift from classic racist Dixiecrate, to redneck Republican.
Can you think of any examples from popular culture that predate this?
