Were Ancient Greeks dark skinned and dark haired like today, or blonde, as portrayed in Greek myths?

I was in Greece for a christening,and I was impressed because I was expecting to see blonde and blue eyes, like Homer has described them, instead I found them dark and all curly hair and fat people,and what made me impression was that they didn't name a baby when he was born but after 1 year hahahaha...

and their songs and melody was all oriental like Arab or Turkish music. Why turkish/Arabic music and Greek music are so similar? Why do a lot of Greeks have black curly hair?
