Welding metal at home?

I make my own jewelry, and in some instances it requires me to weld little bit's of metal together. I tried to weld/melt together two pieces of memory wire with a lighter, but all it did was turn red. No melting. And the lighter can't hold a long enough fire for it to get hot enough, either.

How can I weld little strips of metal together at home?
