Weird "whining" as I accelerate?

I just bought I 2005 Ford Escape; not hybrid. Almost every time I accelerate I hear this weird whining sound, and it feels as if I should be shifting up, but the thing is my car is a automatic. It sounded like my Suzuki atv when my friend kept it in too low of a gear and went fast. What in the heck could that be???
 
does it sound like a whistle or something ? i know some cars out there are designed now a days to produce a certain kind of sound when you accelerate so the engine sounds nice or powerful, check with ford dealership first and ask them that before you go to a mechanic and get ripped off.
