Weird question about Tampons?

I'm 13 and going on a class trip to Catalina tomorrow. I'll be there for a week. I only started my period a few months ago, and so I'm new to this and have never used a tampon.

I'm afraid of getting my period on the trip because we'll be SWIMMING, so I want to learn to use tampons. I want to get used to them before I go on my trip, so I thought maybe I could try putting one in even though I don't have my period. Is that okay, or would it hurt because there's no blood to soak up?
 
haha i justtried one today without my period and im gonna tell u dont
i started panicing because i put it in perfectly and then i thought...did i put it in too deep? omg if i pull on the string will it break? and eventually i got it out
but u can if u have some moisture down there
