it's the sedan deville, with the 4.9 V8 (not the northstar). the heater is making an anti freeze type smell. not very much at all when it's not running, but really bad when it is. i'm not leaking any antifreeze. also after i have ran the heater for awhile, the dash says that it's low on coolant and the a/c compressor is shutting off. what does the heater have to do with the a/c. i know the a/c is messed up, it needs recharged or overhauled. any ideas?

Both use the hvac system and air control box. I would say you have a bad heater core and need to replace it. If the engine begins to get over heated the computer will sense it and make adjustments in an attempt to stop you from burning it up and allow you to drive it to the shop or home. One of these adjustments is to turn off the a/c compressor. It will eventually change the spark timing and also alternate shutting down cylinders. But if you keep on driving it it will finally be defeated and the engine will melt down.

You probably have a small leak at the heater core,a small leak there is fairly hard to detect, especially a small one, most cars it will leak on carpet on passenger side up under dash, but can drip outside where it is hard to see, check the level carefully at the bottle overflow when engine is cold, and you may see the level dropping a fraction of a inch every day then you will know.
