My GP recently gave me a prescription for Amitriptyline (or Elavil) for what she believes is a general anxiety disorder, lack of concentration, and the inability to get restful sleep at night. She gave me an extremely low dose of 10 mg to take at night to see how it went so that if it went alright we could up the dosage. I have a consult with an actual therapist tomorrow, so perhaps she will know more about the problems I've been having, but in the meantime, I'm asking internet land (specifically others who have taken Amitriptyline and its various name brand forms).
About a week after I started taking A., I started noticing some aggravating symptoms. It became very difficult for me to wake up in the morning (which is shared by many others who start taking the medication), but I also started having a sort of "morning sickness" (so much so that I took two pregnancy tests!). I would get nauseous about an hour or so after I woke up, especially if I took my medicine in that time frame. I take a nuraber of other medication (not related to anxiety), and my stomach has become sort of an iron fortress for the medication - it's odd that after all these years it would start being upset about it. I have also gone through the stages where my stomach did in fact get upset at having pills on it, and this current version of nausea feels more like random nausea than what the previous feelings felt like. I have had to eat several saltine crackers each morning just to keep from barfing up all the pills I just took.
I've suffered from terrible IBS in the past, and so after looking up A. online, I was excited to find that it's often given to patients with IBS. I figured it couldn't hurt to kill two birRAB with one stone, right? But again, a week or so after I began the medication, my IBS symptoms rose to a level they have never seen. (The worst part of this is that many of the worst symptoms of my IBS had been dormant for almost a year.) I now get cramps after most meals (particularly those in the evenings). I often feel as though I need to immediately use the restroom, but often don't once I get there, or when I do have to, it's extremely painful.
Last night after having to stop enjoying my meal and drink, I went to the bathroom and noticed my cheeks were bright pink. My cheeks NEVER flush (unless I'm erabarrassed, of course). I didn't think much of it, and left the bathroom. I went back later to brush my teeth before going to bed, and they were STILL flushed and hot to the touch, and remained that way until I went to sleep.
I've read a lot of reviews of Amitriptyline/Elavil that others have posted on site and have certainly read through the side effects list many times in the past few weeks, but it doesn't make any sense to me. I don't know if these symptoms are being caused by something else and just coincidentally happened to take effect around the same time this drug would go into my system, or if the A. is truly wreaking havoc on my body.
Are there any out there who have had similar experiences? Thanks a lot! I know I wrote a lot, haha.
