weird looking growth on the limbs of black walnut tree?

Okay I noticed today on the stems of my blackwalnut tree some funny looing growth. It was redish/pinkish in color, and curved around the limb like a caterpillar, it was about big around a pencil.
I have looked at pics on the net and i know its not gall mites, for they are not on the leaves but they are close to them.
