weighted ab exercise question?

If i anchored my feet under something and used heavier weights, would it work the same if i didn't anchor my feet and used less weight? cause i can't go up like at all with weight behind my head when my feet aren't anchored. And if i did crunches with anchored feet and weight behind my head, would this help with definition? what are some other good exercises and what number of reps and sets should i do with each different weighted exercise?
