Wedding planning involves a lot more than just coming up with cute ideas. I had a wedding planner for my wedding last month. There are 3 phases (planning, design and day of coordination), and a smart wedding planner offers different packages based on what the customer wants. For example, some people want to plan the wedding themselves, but want someone there at the rehearsal and wedding to make sure that things go smoothly. Some people want the whole package!
Wedding planners need to have excellent business and organizational skills. There are a lot of contracts involved in weddings... the wedding planner should understand them so that she can advise her clients. Another thing to consider is that a lot of brides know what they want- they don't want a wedding planner to constantly push her own ideas on them... so even though it's good to be creative and have good ideas, you have to be flexible and accomodating. Your business is dependant on the client's happiness!
You should also be familiar with budgeting and be able to help brides formulate a budget and stick to it.
