Web browser question with my E62

Hey gang,

Web browsing (by using the World Icon) works fine. I also use the GMail application, and I get a lot of forum subscription replies there. Whenever I click on one of the links in gmail to go to the site, some strange things happen.

First, the web browser seems to be a little different. There is a small globe spinning at the top. Also, and the point of my post, is that it seems to be text base only, i.e. pictures and other stuff is not showing up. I went into the browser settings and verified that pictures and whatnot are set to be downloaded, so I'm not too sure what the difference is.

If someone can kindly point out what the difference is between using MediaNet versus the web browser launched from the GMail application, that would be great. It's really hard working with the browser once opened from gmail

Thanks!
Aaron

What happens is that you launch what is called the SERVICES program and not the WEB browser program. I have an unlocked N73 and the two programs are actually different: the WEB is the full web browser, while the SERVICES is the WAP only (for WAP/small pages designed for cell phones) browser.

I believe that on E62 the SERVICES prog is replaced by the MediaNet icon/program (not sure, but I believe I remember seeing that when holding an E62 for a few secs).

Basically what happens is that when u click a link in an email (at least this happens when I receive emails in the Messaging application [I'm not sure if that's what you're using or if you're using the google gmail java app]) but anyways what happens is that links clicked in the messaging program open in the SERVICES / MediaNET prog and not the full browser.

Unfortunately, I don't believe there's a way to change that.

yes, I'm using the gmail java app. And what you describe does seem to be what's happening. It's really quite frustrating and often makes the browsing quite unenjoyable. If I get a email in the gmail app, I'll often go and open up media yet, just so I can at least like what's going on. Of course, that adds a whole nother step.

If anyone knows a work around, I'd like to hear

Just set up your Messaging program to receive gamil as POP3 mail. The java gmail app is great for stupid phones, but if you have a smart phone, why not use it to its full abilities.

This is another reason why FP1 with the new web browser is so desirable; the Web and Services browsers are combined into the same app, so links in emails open in the correct application.

Good point - never thought of that. I'll have to mess with it. I haven't set up any email on it, just cause I didn't know how to sync it with my desktop PC.

I assume you can set the email client to leave the email on the server, right?

Thanks!

It's fairly simple, just go to gmail, click on SETTINGS, then click on FORWARDING AND POP, and select: Enable POP only for mail that arrives from now on.

Then look up the settings you'll need to put into the phone (it's something simple, like pop.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com, but I dont remember exactly), and you'll start getting your email.

IMPORTANT: Set up your inbox on the phone to only download the HEADERS automatically.

As far as I know, the phone doesnt specifically have a function that specifically says leave mail on server, but any mail you don't actually retrieve (the ones you only get the headers for) will still arive to your inbox at home (assuming you use Outlook, Eudora, Apple Mail or similar program for mail). Mail that you do retrive (actually click on it's header on the phone to download the whole body is a little weird (this has something to do with Gmail), sometimes it will still arive to your Outlook at home, but sometimes not.
Either way, all mail will obviously stay on your gmail.com either in your inbox or as archived (depending on how you set up gmail.com).

Obviously, you can use the phone's messaging app to send emails as well.

And I agree FP1 entegrates SEVICES and WEB programs, but honestly that's about the only feature that I would like to have from it (ok, there is the improved/added toolbar in web), but that's it.
