My mom (who is 51 years old and is less than 100 lbs.) has been on 0.5mg ativan and 30mg Remeron every night for one month and one week. Burning sensation in her chest, how can she withdraw from both of these drugs? Should she try to get off of the ativan first or try to wean off of both drugs at the same time?

she didnt self-medicate, thank you very much. Her doctor prescribed it to her because her doctor is a quack. so now she neeRAB to find a way to get off of the prescriptions.

Hi Manders948: I have taken both ativan and remeron, but not at the same time. If I understand the situation, your mother has only taken these medications for a little more than a month? As for the remeron, I was titrated onto it (given a small dose to begin and then slowly increased). To get off it, I would then slowly decrease my dose before quitting. The ativan, as far as I know, can be stopped cold turkey. When I was taking ativan, I only took it for a month but I was taking much higher doses than your mother. I did have some discomfort from stopping it. That doesn't mean your mother would, but be aware it could happen. Please keep us posted on your mother and how she is doing.

So I know I'm very late with this post, I hope you got some professional advice from a Dr. /psychiatrist about you mom weaning off both drugs. I've been taking ativan (1 mg twice a day) for about 4 weeks now, my psychiatrist told me to quit cold turkey..... worst decision of my life! the first day off I was fine, but that night and the next day, I was in withdraw hell :( lying on my bathroom floor crying in a cold sweat, burning up (with chest burning sensations) and dry heaving. I'm now addicted. and have to be weaned off.

My regular dr. and psychiatrist both told me to cut 1 mg immediately, but with the reaction I had, and with a lot of research I decided a slow taper of .25 mg's every 3-4 days would be better for my body. everyone is different. but thats what I would recommend.. first talk with her dr. to make sure to get a schedule specifically for her.
