I hope someone out there can give me some insight into my problem. So many of you out there are so knowlegeable. I had a lamintctomy of L5S1 on Noveraber 23. I had been having pain down my right leg. Today both of my legs are weak. I apparently have nerve damage, but don't understand why it's in the left leg too. I have difficulty clirabing stairs and have horrible balance. I don't get it. This wasn't like this until the surgery. Is it from the surgery or do I need to look elsewhere for the answers. I appreciate your feedback.

Hi Sissy,

Sorry to hear you are continuing to have problems. Have you checked with your doc yet? I too had a laminectomy, L4-5. I had pain in both legs before surgery and still have pain in both legs. It hasn't been very long since your surgery, maybe still some healing/adjusting, or possibly some scar tissue. Be sure to get in touch with your doc if you haven't already. Sorry I can't give much more advice than that. Hang in there and don't panic, it's still early!

What your experiencing is normal, you can expect some sort of pain for 6 months to a year while your body adjusts. If you strengthen your back muscles you'll feel much better, but do it slowly, with simple stretching.Get into a swimming pool, whirlpool
if possible.Hopefully the worst of the pain
is over for you now it's just healing and
strengthening.Are you doing any physiotherapy
exercises? You will find that you have to increase the workload. My surgery was L5-S1
and the key to success is swimming, and continued exercise every day,no matter how long that may be.

Hi,
you really do have my sympathy, I had a laminectomy in 2003 on including L5/S1. It stopped a lot of pain, but have increasing weakness in legs. Cannot tip toe any more, and terrible balance. Specialist says I was unlucky and maybe scar tissue? causing problem. Does not want to operate again. Like you at my wits end and wondering if it will continue to deteriorate.

If I were you, I would get a second opinion from an orthopedic spine specialist or a neurosurgeon who specializes in the spine. This doesn't sound right to me and you may be experiencing nerve damage since it keeps getting worse. I wouldn't take the word of one doctor when it seems obvious that something might be going on.

Please stay in touch and let us know how you are doing.

Cissy, after a major 3 level surgery in late Oct., I am experiencing some of the same problems. It is very early in your recovery and you can expect all kinRAB of symptoms for all while. Just be sure to follow your doctors orders to a T, and if things don't improve, or if they worsen, then call him. It does sound like you may have had nerves being impinged and in that case what you are experiencing is normal. Hopefully, it will get better.....I am praying for the same thing.

Blessings.

Carol

Hi Carol,
Yes it is most certainly nerve damage. Its the S1 Tibial nerve into the calf muscles being pinched at L5/S1 by what they think is scar tissue, henmce slow deterioration.. The neurosurgeon says if they operate again could make it worse, He seems helpful enough. Dont really want another op, original in 2003 was a triple laminectomy both sides L3/L4 L4/L5 and L5/S1, took over 4 hours apparently. I am looking for alternative therapy and am starting by losing some weight and excersising.
What are your experiences and back issues?
Take care
paul
