we just replaced the battery in our car and now the starter is smoking what could be

wrong and how do we fix i? We just got a new battery in our car and we had the starter tested and the starter was fine. when we got home and put the starter back on our car and hooked up the battery tried to start the car and it clicked and then the starter started to smoke. what could cause this and how do we fix it.
 
did you make the starter run for more than 15 seconds? if so, there's your problem. you overheated it.

replace it.

go to a local junkyard and see if they have a cheap starter for your car. to find a local junkyard, check your local yellowpages.
 
Either the starter is defective or the engine is seized - you better hope the starter is defective.
 
sounds like you hooked it up wrong! lets see,.....red thick wire is the positive and the black thick wire is the negative. Then you have 2 or 3 little wires that hook to the solenoid depending on what model of vehicle you have. You have to put the new one in the same way the old one comes out basically. Now that wires are not connected properly you may need an auto manual are a mechanic to solve the problem. DO NOT GET A USED STARTER they are usually junk.
Is it possible that one of those little wires on the solenoid are touching metal and "grounding out". That will smoke for sure dude.
 
bad starter you fried it you have to get a new 1 you should get a new replacement for free
