A group of 4 friends consisting of electrical engineers and computer science just started a business developing websites for.. small business. However, we need to expand our portfolio a bit more, so we have to seek projects. The question is:

Which is more appropriate; to show up at business without prior notice (ala guerrilla) to see if we can "capture" a few clients.

Or call them and make an appointment, then we show our presentations.

The first one shows that we are taking the initiative, however, the potential client might be busy and won't even have time for us. Who knows, they may give us the opportunity some other day.

The other one is to set up a meeting over the phone. The problem is that we won't have tangible contact with the potential clients and may opt to decline an appointment with us...

Which, as business owners (or opinion in general) would you prefer? Thanks for the valuable advice.

Your best bet is to contact local businesses that you're certain doesn't already have a website. There are still a ton of companies (law firms, professional organizations, local shops) that could benefit from having someone lead them through the process.

The only problem is that if you walk in the door, you may not get the owner's attention.

If you call them, you may also not get the owner's attention, and (in general) your sales efforts are easier to avoid because you're viewed as a telemarketer (trying to sell via the phone).

That's why face to face sales tends to be eaiser, but take a lot more time and attention (thus requiring you to charge more to make up for the effort).

You can make people feel like you offer a higher quality product by doing face-to-face sales though.
