Water damage - Is it the battery or the phone?

My LG VX8350 fell into water, and I did the "battery out dry off" thing. The phone worked fine for about three months, then one day it would not charge. The charger was plugged in, and the screen showed the verizon logo, which would flash on and off. I did the phone calls to Verizon, I went to the store, all that a big waste of time and effort. The person at the store said I could buy a battery but if it didn't work then sorry. They would not let me use one of the store batteries to check for "liability" reasons. I put the phone and charger in a drawer and, thankfully, got a free replacement phone from my sister, who had a spare. A month later I took the VX8350 out and just for kicks tried to turn it on. It seemed to work! I used the MP3 on it to listen to some tunes and it worked great. Then I went online to activate the phone and presto, it went back to doing the Verizon logo flash on/off thing. My question is, is there a way to check if the phone will work with a new battery without having to puchase a battery? I prefer my old phone to the one I'm using now.

water damage can definately fry circuitry. the best thing you can do if you get it wet is to:
1:remove the battery and phone backing.
2: allow all parts to dry for a day or so.
replace the battery and see if it works... if not, try using a different battery [maybe from a friends cell]. if it works with the new battery, you know you just have to replace your battery... but if not- sorry, but you need a new phone!!

mine was dropped in a bucket of water and wouldn't charge for three days but then it worked fine afterwards. The screen is washed out but other than that I've had no problems.
I took out the battery and set it on a towel to dry for two days, though.
