Was this such a wrong thing?

I had a friend who liked this guy and eventually I also started to like this guy (after she spent 100 bucks at a school auction on a DIFFERENT guy). She didn't do anything with this guy, they didn't even date. She went on a date with another guy over this last weekend and during that weekend I was texting this guy and I found out that he liked me too. I haven't done anything with him other than like a friendly hug and flirting, because I didn't want to do anything because of my friend. My friend is gone over the last 3 days and the next 2 days and so I texted her asking her if she still really liked him, because she went on a date with another guy over the last weekend and she said "No, why?" and so I answered telling her that I liked him and that he liked me too, but I wasn't going to do anything if she still liked him and she replied with "Wow. Thanks." I asked her if that was a good wow seeing that it could be saying thanks for not doing anything if she didn't want me to and she said "No not really. I would never like someone you liked. That's bull." and I replied with "I didn't want to hurt you and I didn't want to go behind your back. Would you rather me do that?" and she said "I'd rather you be a little considerate about your friend's feelings. Get in my shoes and tell me how you'd react." Well I've had that happen before and I don't care, you can't help it if you like someone or if someone likes you. Well I replied with "Well I wouldn't be happy, but I wouldn't want to stop them from being happy. I was confused because you went on a date with ***** over the weekend." and she said "Kay. Have fun with ****." I then said "I know you're mad at me and I don't want you to be. I just thought that if I at least told you it'd be better that way. I won't do anything if you don't want me to." and she never replied. Now this girl never dated this guy she simply liked him and I don't see what I did wrong by liking him. I won't do anything if she doesn't want me to. She doesn't even like him anymore. Was I so wrong to like him and have him like me back?"
