Was there really a 'choke point' in human evolution? Did we really all come from

only a few females? My prof. said this in passing and it amazed me. Something along the lines that at some point during human evolution there was only a handfull of reproducing females (maybe 1). That would mean that we all came from one of five females or maybe even the same one!
I was wondering if anyone knew anything about this or could direct me somewhere that I could research it.
