Was the rule about not hitting women in place to make up for the fact that they

couldn't vote, own land, work,? ...etc?

Is that why men say things like, "You're equal now, so I can hit you." ??

Just curious what striving for equality has to do with that social stigmas that I could've sworn were put in place to protect the physically weaker rather than as a means of making it up to those who didn't have rights.
Men were still given the right to vote and own land before women insinuating that they were in some way superior to them...and yes there were always women who worked out of necessity, but the ideal was seen as a woman staying at home cooking while her husband went out and earned his salary that she was dependent on. You didn't answer my question.
Yes, he should hit back. I'm not saying the stigma is right; I'm questioning their reasoning for abandoning the stigma.
