Lincoln was a leftest president. Yet he ran as a republican (at that time the republican party was much closer to the left than the right) Was this because of the "free silver movement" or because McKinley betrayed his party or both?

The party that Lincoln was a member of is dead. The Republican Party as it currently exists has nothing to do with Lincoln. It's just a shambling zombie, a ghostly shell of its former self.

The Republican Party of Lincoln's day was a very, very different entity than it is now - you really can't compare them. By the same token, there's only a passing resemblance between the Democrats of Lincoln's day and present-day Democrats.
Lincoln was a very complex man - you can't justify trying to pigeonhole the guy.

There's no use comparing the modern political parties with what they were 40 years ago, much less a century.
