by Susan Kay? After reading the book "Phantom" (which by the way is a great book) I noticed that there were things in the movie that were in the book as well, and I know for a fact that the book came out years before the movie.
For example, in the movie they show that Erik was rescued from a freak show by Madame Giry. As I recall, that never happened in the original book, but in "Phantom", Erik was in a gypsy freak show where he was shown to the public like in the movie.
