Was my nephew a victim of sexism in your opinion?

For his high school, he had to do some amount of community service. When he went to volunteer at a domestic violence shelter, he was flatly refused, simply on the grounds he was a man. Isn't this a clear case of sexism? It's not like he is planning to sue them or anything, but why is this type of treatment towards men seen as acceptable?

As an aside (at the risk of sounding callous) isn't shielding these women from men a little bit over-coddling?
