Was Michelangelo's sculpture for Pope Julian Tomb ("Moses" / Active-Contemplative

life) symbolic of Spiritual? On last night's SECRETS OF THE DEAD: Michelangelo Revealed episode, there was a big deal about the associations that the sculpture had with the Holy See and reform - minded Catholics of the 1530s - 1550s; was he attempting critique of the Church or of the Papacy? The story seemed a bit of a long jump but was interesting how the Papal Archive and Italian ancient city records were turning up unpublished writings ! ! ! 10 points for best analysis and reply ; thanks

Yes, he was condemning the unreformed Church -- I doubt that Luther's points were as cogent as those of a widely published humanist

Erasmus of Rotterdam

Great show! The shots of how the Moses face turned 90 degrees was odd and yet believable !
