Was Kate Winslet's Oscar for her career achievements? Or was she that great in The Reader?

For the record, I have not seen The Reader and therefore cannot make my own personal opinion about this. But I can't help but think that her Oscar for Best Lead Actress was awarded to her because of her excellent acting career, not for her performance in The Reader. If that is the case, do you think that is right or wrong? Shouldn't the Academy be awarding the best performance of the year? Not giving awards to actors who have paid their due?
