Had total knee replace 10/7, for last 2 weeks was in phys rehab facility. Came home yesterday. There I was given oxycodone 5 mg twice a day. Had one yesterday a.m. before discharge. My knee pain doesn't need it any more-knee doing well. Last night I tried to go to bed without taking it, and just couldn't get to sleep at all. Took 2 x-str tylenol at midnight, finally got up at 2 am and took one. Even in the rehab, I only got sleep in 2 hour bits, and am exhausted. I think it also acts as a diuretic on me - have to P every 2 hrs. Not even to mention what it has done to my bowels and makes me feel queasy all the time! I just need to sleep so badly.

I go back to Dr on Thurs 10/30, and wish I could be off it like NOW!

Do things like tylenol pm which has benedryl in it, I think, help with sleeping, or any herbal teas? Any advice appreciated.

hey jan.--- Take it from someone(like me!) who is still heavily into the oxys, you want to get off these meRAB asap! if you have only been on them for two weeks, and you don't need them for your knee anymore --- definitely work with your doctor to stop taking them. As I have found out, they become a long-time habit very easily.

Hi Janni

Hope the knee surgery was a successful one. I think that the oxycodone can be weaned from gradually without horrible effects. Start really stretching between doses. You may get a bit uneasy as the body calls for it, but busy yourself with distracting things. I know you are probably not too mobile yet, so knit, dust, whatever you can do to try and stretch the time between doses.

The body and brain get real used to opiates real quick! However, I am sure with a good weaning plan worked out with you and yoyr doctor, all will be fine. A good natural substance to take for sleep is Melatonin. It comes in 1and 1/2 and 3 mg doses. Try the 1 and 1/2 first. It is sold with the supplements in drugstores, supermarts, just everywhere. It is what out bodies proiduce naturally when it is time to wind down for sleep. It also helped me to stay off the computer and away from TV in th few hours before bedtime. Read, or if you must watch TV, stick to dopey comedies.

Best wishes

I would have to agree with the previous two posters... I have been addicted to oxycodone & hydrocodone twice now. I am on the third day getting off them for the second time. They can very easily become a long term habit with a price that can be hard to pay. Both with money and more importantly the people you love the most in life.
I am having to stepdown to tramadol for about a week to make the transition. I was unable to get through the severe withdrawls of cold turkey quitting the narcotics.

Sleeping is the worst, I will have to try the melatonin.

Good luck to you, you can get off them and will be far better without them.

God Bless

Janni,

If you've only taken the oxy for 2 weeks at such a low dose there really isn't a reality of being dependant on it already. If you're having trouble sleeping, you could try some tylenol pm or advil pm, or benadryl, or if you prefer the herbal route there's Valerian route. Seriously though at that dose over such a short term the risk of dependency is pretty much non-existent.

Hi Janni, I hope you are doing better by now. I suggest that you buy some valarian root, 5-HTP and melatonin. Both are natural supplement that will help you relax and sleep. The valarian root is all-natural supplement that is non-addicting and non-habit forming that promotes relaxion. The 5-HTP is like tryptophan (like when you eat turkey). This little corabo works for me.

God Bless!
