I recently applied for a job,and had a successful interview. They called for references later that same day,but then I got a refusal letter stating that my skills and experience weren't applicable for the position. This isn't true,so I knew something happened with a reference. I called the prospective company's HR department, and was told that they were unable to get ahold of some references,or were told they were unable to give a reference, and the one person they did speak to gave a bad reference. She refused to tell me who, which I feel is not right at all, since this is affecting my livelihood! My current boss even told me that they called that day and he gave a positive review, and he wouldn't be affected anyways since it is a PT job that I am keeping, so they clearly spoke to at least one person with a positive review. I have contacted all other references, and they said to me they would give a positive review. How do I find out exactly what happened?

The behind the scenes work is hard to disclose. Most is usually confidential and can’t be released to prospective candidates. When dealing with references, do not give the names and numbers of people that you worked with. Always give a corporate name and number from the previous company; if it was a smaller, local company… I do not know what to suggest.

I have had a friend call my references and say they were looking into hireing me. I have done this for people to to see what they said about me or someone I know. Then you may know who gave you the bad one.

Legally they cannot give a bad reference but sometimes they still do. You won't find out who did, but I would rework my list of references and think about maybe eliminating one or two.
