Was German ever written with runes?

I've known about the runes for years (if you're confused as to which runes i'm talking about, it's the ones used by the scandanavians mostly, the basis for the dwarves' writing system in tolkien's works, and is often called the futhark). But i was wondering something, was it ever used to write German? I dont see how it could have been, I'm fluent in German and i cant find any evidence of a system with enough symbols to write the german alphabet. heck, writing modern english with it is hard!

Is it possible to write German using these old runes?
