War of the Worlds SFX

I enjoyed seeing War of the WorlRAB again on BBC last week (despite the break for the news and the weak ending).
But one scene intrigues me. Its where Tom is driving his car along the highway with his kiRAB in the back (yes strange how the broken down cars have left a convienent space for him to pass).
The camera moves around the car as they exchange dialogue, driving at high speed, dodging cars and obstacles. It all looks very genuine (no car on trailer, backscreen or blue screen) but hard to believe that they would use Tom and the kiRAB in what would be/could be a dangerous scene. Any ideas?

Well if they can make people look like they're sitting in the cockpit of a starfighter nowadays, I'm sure they could digitally insert people into a car on a road.

Don't know if that is what they did, but its a technical possibility.

a FABULOUS piece of film making IMO, it's a mix of the actors in the car (not moving) and the car driving along the road, with the background filmed seperately (i believe)

beautifully constructed and exceptinal planning is needed for something like this

it's in my top three scenes in the film, along with the whole ferry attack and the plane crash

The effect was good....but was let down very badly with Tom driving the car that didn't match with what was happening behind him.

The steering was not happening at times despite him doing the giant slalom down the road. Very obvious and poorly executed

Off I shot to youtube and found several interesting videos on the Making of WoTW. Unfortunately not on SFX. Anyone have the 2 disc DVD and is there a video on how they shot this scene?

Yeah that's an absolutely genius piece of filmmaking with NO greenscreen, the camera was on a rig on the roof of the car (I think). I've really got to watch Children of Men again.
