i think it would be a cool hobby to take up, and possibly a cool career option. anyone out there know if you have to take courses and be like certified or anything to become a great photographer, and get jobs at studios. what type of equipment would i need, at the moment i have a sony cyber shot digital camera... will i need something better?

Photography is a great hobby and a great career if you have a passion for it! You don't HAVE to take courses to be certified. One of my friends is a great photographer and photographs really big bands, and he never took any classes. But classes certainly do help you be familiar with everything and give you good techniques. You will probably get a better job if you took classes. As for equipment, most people use DSLR cameras, but point & shoots (like your sony cybershot) won't prevent you from taking bad shots! You can take great shots with any camera. It's up to you if you want to advance in equipment. You can also purchase lighting equipment like umbrellas and reflectors. They aren't a necessity but certainly help your shots look great!
