Want to lighten hair, does peroxide work?

Had beautiful golden locks, my "friend" tricked me w/ "temporary dye" and it's an awful dark reddish mud :(

Trying to gradually lighten back to gold WITHOUT AN ORANGE TONE(had bad experiences)

I've heard lemon juice? Peroxide? ..which works best w/o making it orange?
