Want to buy an older Mazda Miata for fun weekend driving - what year would be good?

I used to ride motorcycles. But after two serious crashes and two totaled bikes in 13 months, I'm thinking about giving up two wheels for good. I've always like the Miata and think I'd get just as much enjoyment with the wind in my face in a convertible. I like the 1990-1993 models in their styling, but haven't ruled out anything that is under $4000 (my last insurance check on the totaled bike). What are your suggestions for the best year in that type of price range and your reasons for selecting that year? Thanks.
