I just bought a new LCD for my bedroom. Therefore I need to replace my SD receiver with a HD receiver. After trying this online I became confused as to costs ect. So I tried calling but had not much better luck. All of my receivers are rentals. I think that I should be able to order a new receiver and when I receive it send the old one back to them and my monthly rental will increase to $10 per month for that receiver. Where I got confused is the mention of installation fees. Should I not be able to switch out the two receivers myself? BTW I have six months to go on my contract.

Here are 3 great links on the topic.

Some of these links are really about "retention" rather than "upgrade" but still apply.

When you call Bell say you want to UPGRADE your SD receiver to an HD receiver...

They would ask you to pay 100$ on a credit card for the rental certificate, amount which would be refunded on the first bill after you activated the receiver

You would also have to pay the cost of the technician, this would be on your next bill as well. All rental clients needs to have a professional installation for their rental receiver

The technician will come to install the second LNBF on your dish (if it's not in place already) and hook your receiver to your TV.

You are lucky that Bell changed heir policies... A year ago clients were unable to change their receivers during the hole lenght of the contract EVEN if client wanted to upgrade his receiver to a model that cost more per month

If you have a Bell land line you can also ask them to charge it to your phone line so that you'll receive the bill for the $100 and then receive the Credit on your bill for the $100 the next month. I'm just sticky about giving out my CC# to random rep over the phone and i'd rather have it show on the bill for the charge.

I had the discussion about replacing 1 reciever with a rental one with them before and they won't budge. All rental equip has to be installed by one of thier techs or they won't give it to you. If you purchase one then they don't care who does it.

UNLESS PROCEDURE HAVE CHANGED over the last year, they COULD ONLY DO THAT for the ORIGINAL INSTALLATION. EXISTING CLIENTS client had to provide a CREDIT CARD number to be able to rent an extra receiver or upgarde theirs. Lots of clients were complaining about the procedure, and lots of clients were saying it is stupid they can not charge it to their Bell Canada account.

They may have changed or they may not of. I know i just upgraded to an HD receiver about 3 months ago and they wanted a CC but i didn't want to give it to them and they gave in and gave me the option of the bill it to the land line. Could have just been a one time offer and the rep was feeling nice or they may just offer it and not mention it out right unless ppl ask for it or complain about not wanting to use a CC.

Reps can not make "one time offer" type of deal... If he offered it to you it's because he could offer it to other clients as well...

I still dont see the purpose of a "rental certificate" if its credited back to your account the next month.... I mean, you pay $100 and then they give you $100. They cancel each other out. I'm totally confused ;) :P.

Its for those that would change their mind and downgrade the day after they ordered and waste company time. You won't get your deposit back. ;)

It's a way for them to make sure that the receiver will be activated...
The credit is applied only after the receiver is activated!

I have trouble myself understanding why they make it that way...
Rentals are always installed by an Express Vu tech, who in 98% of the case will call EV himself to activate the receiver
