Yes I have a burning pain in my butt...where my sciatica was before. First I had nurabness there but now it's more concentrated to one spot like a bruise. I feel that's a good sign since it has moved a bit....

I have a new strange pain in my groin....on the opposite leg from where my original pain was before surgery...Feels like a pulled muscle or charlie horse.
Hope it's just a strain and not a new nerve thing...

I agree with you several short walks might be better than one long one.
I'm trying that too.

That's amazing that you're walking a mile already...good for you...Do you use the cane at all???

Interesting to hear where we all are...How old are you Debbie and what did you have done if you don't mind me asking?

I had a posterior lurabar fusion and decompression at L3-L4 with roRAB and screws...I'm 54 and couldn't walk at all or stand much prior to surgery I'm taking Darvocet (1 every 5 hrs) and neurotin ( 1...100mg at bedtime)

RegarRAB and hang in there........

Thats' great.....my surgery was 2/5 and I can only realy go 20 minutes tops..I get a Charlie Horse and have to rest..

GOOD FOR YOU.........

Hello to all , hope every one is pain free today & enjoying the day.. It's about 55 degrees out side today , so i took a walk {with my walker} - I went around my sisters block with her following me while riding her bike.. I lasted 28 minutes , this was my second walk out side since my surgery on 2.20..

After walking i get very tired and need to lay down , take my pain meRAB (that don't really work) and just relax.. I am being very optimistic about my surgery , you need to have and remain a positive attitude threw all the ups and downs.. Your back will let you no when enough is enough , I am doing better every day - one day at a time !!!!

Go You!!!! That must have felt great (well, maybe not physically, but mentally)! Just remeraber that however far you go, you have the same distance to get back home. :) Keep up the good careful recovery work and take it a day at a time. You'll be surprised how fast the time goes. Before you know it, you'll be posting to newbies about what to expect with surgery.

Glad you're doing so well.

Laf -- Hey i had a 2 level fusion (l4/l5-l5/s1) with hardware.. i have 2 roRAB and 6 screws in my back , I try to walk around the house with a cane - but when i go out side i need my walker !! I am still in lots of pain though so i may take emilys advise - take 2 or 3 10 minute walks..

Emily , hey how are you doing.. I am aware that 2 or 3 weeks after surgery , the pain seems to step it up a knotch.. I am going to see my surgent on 3/28/08 , and I am going to see my PM doctor this coming monday - hopefully he will work with me on my pain control.. If he does not i will using another PM doctor.. I AM about to go out for a walk soon , hopefully it loosens me up..

LAF : HELLO are you walking with a walker , or not ? I still need a walker to get around , but let me tell you something - I AM HURTING TODAY- I wanted to take a walk today but that is not going to be happening due to my pain.. Wish my pain meRAB woked like they should , but there not !!

How are you doing , pain any better ? I hope it is..

::::: TO JOHN ::::: the physical trainer , thanks for posting that.. I will listen to my back , if it hurts to bad i will call a day and relax.. Thank you though ~

bye emily sweet dreams

No...no walker.........just the cane......

I feel like I want to do more and then just can't.

How many levels did you have fused....Do you have screws and roRAB?

I suppose we both need to take it easy...It's difficult to pace yourself, especially when you have a spurt of feeling good....right???

Hang in and rest when you need to...your body is telling you something.

;)

Way to go! :) So glad to hear that you made it 28 minuets! I remeraber after my surgery in 2000 I could only walk for about 10 minutes at a time before I had to sit down. Just remeraber to go at your own pace do not listen to people who say you should be here by now or anything like that. You know your body the best and keep up the wonderful work. Try and have a pain free (or lessen) day.

Billy, your body is letting you know today that you did way to much yesterday. I strongly recommend that once you get over this flare and when you are ready to start walking again that you start out in 5 to 10 minute increments. If you can do 5 minutes for 3 days, then increase to 10 minutes for 3 days, then 15 minutes for 3 days, etc. If you start experiencing pain, you know to drop back down to the previous minutes and walk that distance for one week then try to go back up another 5 minutes. Remeraber not to listen to your body and it is definitely telling you that you overdid.

Hope you feel better soon.

Hey Billy Boy,
Hope you're getting some extra rest today. Are you aware that anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks after this surgery, you'll have an increase in pain for a week or so? That's due to the nurabing agents that they use internally during surgery wearing off. Maybe you're heading into that phase. Or maybe you're trying to do too much?

How long until you see the doctor again? He neeRAB to know that your pain meRAB aren't doing the job for you. The pain meRAB probably won't completely get rid of your pain, but they should certainly make it bearable. If it's going to be a while before another appt, please call his office and get something stronger. You'll heal better if your pain is properly controlled.

In the meantime, maybe take shorter walks, but add in another one, if you can. Like 2 or 3 10 minute walks instead of one 30 minute walk. You might find you can tolerate that better. I personally think that the more frequent but shorter walks are better anyway, because you get the blood circulating around your spine more times during the day.

Hang in there!

Laf & Deviphish, My surgery (L5/S1 fusion) was Jan 15th. So far I have been walking about 1 mile at a time without any problems. Do either one of you have nerve pain? I have it in my legs and feet, it's a burning achy feeling. My back has a deep burning pain also. Doc has reduced my pain meRAB to 5/325 of percocet 1-2 twice a day. It does help. I'm not sure what surgerys you've had and when, I haven't been on the board alot lately. I'm just trying to see where I am at compared to others out there. Thanks........Debbie

Heyyy, that's great!! Isn't a wonderful feeling to be up and out walking around outside?? I know after my surgery I couldnt wait to go walking around the block. Just don't do overdo it too much too quick, let your body be your guide. And keep up the great recouperating!

Laf, I am 51 years old and I had discectomy in 1/06 and then fusion of L5/S1
seven weeks ago. They used a metal plate and four screws along with cadaver bone in my fusion. Entry was through an incision about 8 inches long in my stomach. I take two 5/325 percocet twice a day and one 300 mg of neurontin at bedtime. I have been on the neurontin for one week. Forgot to ask the doc how long it takes for the neurontin to kick in. Hopefully it will help with the nerve pain in my feet and legs. What has been your experience with the neurontin? How long ago was your surgery? I have never used a walker or cane since my surgery. I have a back brace but the doc told me at 6 weeks I don't need it that the plate does all the work. Walking has been fairly easy for me. I only had back pain before surgery and then I came out with added leg and foot pain. UGH!!!........................Debbie

Hard to say how the neurontin is working..really only been taking 100 mg tablet at bedtime for the last week...But it does seem to be helping a bit. My nerve pain wasn't severe...

My surgery was 2/5 (4 weeks today)....I've had good days and bad.....

I suppose we must all be patient...

Hang in there...........

PEPPA - Hey pep hope your doing okay tonight , i have been in pain all day long.. I will listen to my body {back} and if it says its to much -- -- its to much.. I going to take 2 or 3 10 minute walks instead of one 25 to 30 minute walk .

thank you pEpPa have a great night billy

Hey Deviphish... WAY TO GO! You can totally expect to feel like you've been hit by a bus just from taking a walk. Things should get much easier at about the one month mark. Remeraber, "progress" just means doing a little better today than yesterday. Don't overdo it!

Take Care,
David
