VZ in Puerto Rico

I checked the coverage map for my plan online and PR was highlighted almost 100%. Same was true of my parents sprint phone. However when I was there, my pops calls Sprint and they said its roaming. I called verizon and they told me its roaming. I have a family share plan dating back to 2/05. Why am I roaming in PR? Its the USA. I have a USA plan. Is HI and AK roaming too?

What plan are you on exactly?

With current ACII/Nationwide Plans, Sprint is Paid Roam in Puerto Rico. You will see a solid roam indicator there, indicating a per-minute charge.
Current ACII/Nationwide PRL's do, however, prefer and allow free roam on Puerto Rico Telephone Company. They cover most of the island, and like I said it's free. It should be rare for you to land on Sprint.

Verizon has a very solid native network in HI, and AK is free roaming on Alaska Digitel and ACS Wireless.

AMERICA'S CHOICE II FAMILYSHR PRI 500 ANY UNL N&W/IN CALL $50.00 1YR 0205

copied and pasted from my verizon. the 0205 is when I last signed a contract I do believe. ive had no reason to sign another contract since then, nothing much has changed and I dont text much, not even $5 a month worth.

the sprint plan is one of the dinosaur fair and flexible plans that only charges you $5 for every 100 min overage. my dad refuses to leave that plan for that reason.

Interesting. Is your PRL up to date?

If your PRL is up to date, your phone will prefer Puerto Rico Telephone Company, which is free roam, and only use Sprint (paid roam) if PRTC is not available. Maybe you were in an area that was only served by Sprint?

I was getting a solid triangle in old san juan up in our hotel room. Outside I dont think I was getting the triangle. But like I said, my dad called sprint and they said roam, so that spooked me and I called verizon and they said $.69 per minute which irritated me. So much for america's choice. I guess I wouldnt expect it to work in the phillipines or guam either. Ill have to chekc when the statement comes through online in a couple weeks to see if I got billed, but I quit using it after the first day of 5 day trip.
