VW camper vin number plate missing?

I have a 1971 VW camper van and the vin plate behind the drivers seat is missing. The reg plate comes back a 1971 when I checked it. But the big problem is the chassis number back by the moter says its a 1973 and this number does not match my registration which says its a 1971 as well. Any ideas has the back of the bus been replaced?? I am trying to get an MOT at the moment and they wont do it the way is is.
 
Maybe it's a cut 'n' shut. Made from two different vehicles, the age means it's definitely possible, but it had an MOT before, so if you've just bought it, I'd contact the seller and the authorities as it could invalidate any insurance if you are injured in an accident.
