vocal chord paralysis

Hello everyone

I was told by my ENT that my right vocal cord is paralyzed and that the left is sluggish. As a result, I get out of breath very easily. Anything with excertion is out of the question. This has been since 2007 and I know that it's not going to get any better, but can this get worse? Can my left vocal cord stop working as well. I really don't want to have a trach (sp)

Any help on this would be appreciated!!!!

May I ask what the cause of the vocal chord paralysis was? I think that would make all the difference in the prognosis for the second one?

I had a c5 -c6 disc fusion in 2007. I lost my voice for awhile, but when it came back the breathing problems started. The Ent says that this is chronic and that there's nothing else that can be done. I can't accept that. I can't even take out the rubbish without getting out of breath. This is no way to live.

Hello, I'm still looking for any information on paralyzed vocal cords. Please, if you anyone can help me it would be appreciated!!!!

thanks

Oh, I'm sorry to hear what you are going through. I wish I knew something that would help you..

I asked because my sister had here vocal chords nicked during a thyroid surgery, resulting in her having the most unusual sounds, and making it very difficult for her to talk..It was frightening. After she recovered from the thyroid surgery, she had another surgery to repair the damage, then on top of all that, she got a staph infection while in the hospital.

I wouldn't settle for "there's nothing you can do" either. keep searching, until you find your answer...My best to you.

I'm sorry your sister is going through so much. I hope things are getting better for her!!!
I really would be interested in hearing if anyone else is going through this, maybe they will have advice for the both of us!

I just came on today. I have this and I've had it for a a few years. My ENT said I got it from a viral infection that infected my vocal cords. There are things that you can do but like take speech therapy to build them up or botex shots to tighten them up. But that will not last for ever. Hope that helps

Darisa, i realize you gave up on this board and may not see this, but you may get more useful feedback if you post on the "ear, nose and throat" message board within this site. I have only one working vocal chord myself but it's new to me as well so i don't have answers for you. Keep searching. e

Darisa, I'm going to an ENT in Pittsburgh for the first time at the end of the month. Would you mind telling me (you can PM me) who you work with? After a zillion tests for shortness of breath I was sent to Pittsburgh where a pulmonologist there suspects vocal chord dysfunction so I'm getting the old video tube down the nose thing. Have you had it done? Is it uncomfortable? Do they give you something for it?

At any rate, I've been researching online about VCD. No idea about paralysis. Is that the same thing? I have heard botox works well though and lasts for 4-6 months.

HI Darisa

Sorry I've been away for a long time. If you read my old posts you can find some very helpful info. We have a lot in common ;)
