has anyone here been prescribed vistaril for their anxiety? does it work or have any side effects?

Hi! I've taken it before(really knocked me out) and was just re-prescribed it recently. I haven't taken it yet because I've been pretty good lately. What I do know is that you really can't take Vistaril or its other name Atarax for very long because it begins to lose its effectiveness when taken on a regular basis. It's also classified as an antihistamine also. I'm really pondering whether I want to take this or not. I hope it really works for you. Thanks so much--Hopeto--

I am currently on Vistaril. This is the first time for me. The first few doses made me overwhelmingly sleepy. I have not noticed a major difference in my level of anxiety, but I am sleeping now. I used to have disturbances in my sleep. When I sleep now, if I wake up, it's not long before I go back to sleep. It's an effective drug, but everyone's chemical makeup is different. What works for one, will not work for all.

I was prescribed vistaril for sleep when I need it. It helps, but it makes me feel groggy in the am., (atarax),. I only take it when I absolutely need it for sleep. I can't take it in the daytime because it makes me too sleepy. It is an antihistamine and it is used to treat iching due to alergies, poison ivy, etc. also. It is just not something I would use to treat my anxiety.

I was taking it with Xanax when my anxiety was really bad and I had no appetite because of said anxiety. At that time, it mellowed me out well and I was able to eat just fine.

So then I was better after taking Lexapro and didn't need to take all the other pills as much. I stopped the Vistaril and just took Xanax as needed.

The anxiety came back recently really bad (the lexapro doesn't seem to be working the same now that I have quit taking it and then started again a few months later) and I took Vistaril I had left over again with the Xanax and it sure kicked my butt. Wow, it was both great and a bit scary at the same time. I felt so tired and loopy. I sorta felt like if I actually allowed myself to go to sleep, I might not wake up. It lasted about 8 hours too! It really depenRAB on how much Xanax you take with it.

Now, I take Benedryl with Xanax and it helps keep me mellow. I break them both into pieces so I can control doses better. I am all about not taking more than I need to.
