virgin mobile phone service?

went to radio shack today & picked up the samsung intercept on a pre paid 40 dollar plan.. went through so much b/s to get the phone only to come home to my neighborhood & have the service drop completley. i get zero bars & the phone says it can't connect to the network when i try to make a call. i spent a good amount of money on the phone, & it's basicly a paper weight. i will find out tomorrow but i'd like to here what you guys have to say to my question which is will the take the phone back & help me out or will they tell me to screw off? i'm hoping to get a refund, i bought the phone next to my house & was told the service was good... yea, about that.
