Virgin Media's DNS Servers Vs OpenDNS?

We have been with Virgin Media for quite some time, we usually get around 8-10mb download speed and usually around half a meg upload speed, now that's pretty good.

Anyway, hearing about in the news how people have been getting into trouble for illegally downloading files and how your ISP can sniff your traffic and see what you're up to, I didn't like the fact my privacy was being invaded by Virgin. (I don't illegally download files). So I thought about how I could prevent this...

1. I could sign up for a VPN and gain a completely anonymous connection to the web, the only downside is that it cost's more than I pay for my actual internet connection myself, which pretty much sucks

2. Change my DNS servers, since the fact that your computer or router contacts the DNS server to convert domain names to IP addresses, I'm guessing that Virgin sniff some of their traffic from there, so instead of using Virgin's DNS servers, I could use OpenDNS, which have nothing to do with Virgin what so ever. - I do realise this doesn't make you annonymous on the web, but it makes it that little bit harder for your ISP to see what your doing, plus the best thing of all is that its FREE :D

So I deided to go for option 2. Out of interest I decided to revert back to Virgin's DNS Servers and man it was SLOW! and sometimes my connection would just completely drop! I contacted Virgin in the phone to see what was going on and the guy in India had no idea what I was talking about. In the end, I reverted back to OpenDNS, and so far, everything seems to be fine...

Anyone else seem to have this problem?
