Video of ignition switch removal

+1 on doing a great job. I saved the YouTube site and copied the pictures to a H-D repair file - thanks. Now I can change out my fork legs too.

Don't know if the 06 is much different, but on my 09 it was no big deal to get things aligned again. Look at the ignition lock, (the part you removed) it has two sets of lugs, one pair near the top and one pair near the bottom. There's nothing in between. Take a small flashlight and look down the lock hole. Most likely the upper lock plate has moved. You can see if it is not aligned with the lower lug. Just take the lock and stick it down far enough so the lower lugs engage the upper groove and move it till it's lined up. Once you can see that everything is lined back up push the lock all the way down, make sure everything works and take it out again. Your homemade tool has to be able to reach both sets of lugs so they both move when you turn it.

Thank you.
I will give this a go Saturday. Great Video. I pinched some wires and my lights are acting funny. Doing a redo going internal with the new handle bar wireing, playing around and jacked the switch.

cll375 thank you for solving an otherwise mystery. i've always been intimidated with how the ignition locking system works. good work, and great information for a lot of us.

Will this method work on a '96 model year? Looks to be the same. I need to replace the lable on mine and I dont know how to get it off. Cant read it anymore.

OK, I have done the internal wireing of the bars, I made the tool ( after two days of trying to get it in a starting position, 5 min with the tool and done ) I put the swith back in, the lock position works, off works but when its in the run position the start button doesnt do anything. I can hear the fuel pump come on but nothing happens when I hit the start button. I tested the wireing with a meter and its good. Fuses look good. Also speed lights are not on, no odometershows nothing and alarm shows nothing

I'm glad to see this is still helping people out. There are only two cams in the switch to turn. The tool has to be long enough to turn them both at the same time.
