Video games or Vista?

But it will probably also be supported under DX9c, since it will probably take two years before most games will be supported under DX10. In the meantime the Crysis folk will want to make a little money, like sell 500,000 copies to break even.

What is good is that because Vista has such high requirements that the base level platform is now higher. So developers won't need to make a game that will run on a 1GHz machine as the minimum. Now they'll need to make it a 3GHZ proc as a minimum (2.5GHZ for dual core).

The big problem is that PC gaming is dying, as evidenced by the real estate taken up in game stores. So if there are 20 stellar titles for the PC over a year's time, that means that they'll likely only appeal to people buying 4 - 5 games a year (like HL2, Doom3, Far Cry did.)

The consoles will probably soon need patches, too. What they'll start doing is start selling subscriptions, so after you play a game they'll sell you a new level at $10 a pop. Just look at Steam and Half Life, the infrastructure is there to be exploited. I, of course, hate Steam, so I wouldn't want to go that way. But Nintendo's VC model, coupled with Steam like delivery, will probably be the new model in the future, except instead of delivering old games, they'll be delivering new games, one level at a time. And the reason why they're going to go this way is to combat piracy. You'll get the basic source code for the game then the actual levels will be delivered. Each time you buy a new level the game will be authenticated, new DRM keys will be downloaded to the console. If you don't have the right keys the game will just crash. (I had two different versions of the original Half life. If I put the wrong one in Gordon would die when he came out of the tram. The same will happen with consoles.)

But Vista? No thanks. The next OSX and the present Linux with AiX, will do the same things. Linux had widgets before Vista, just like Opera has widgets right now. Multi transparent windows, rotating windows, pop up windows, multi desktops, widgets, etc., are all in Linux right now. I'm not paying $250 for the privilege. I will be paying $150 for the next OSX, though. I just don't like the new Vista licensing model. People who upgrade their PCs once or twice a year are going to learn to hate Vista.

Scrolling isn't the hard part, but most people don't even know it's there. I think that's the problem.

Also, everyone is collectively thinking that nobody posts in there so they don't bother to post in there themselves, which results in minimal activity.

Is it true that Vista supposedly won't play 90% of the games already out?

It seems that Vista cannot play DX9 games, because it has no DX9. So they are going to have to come out with a wrapper. Those few games which do play on Vista play at a lower performance level.

So why bother until it can play older games? So yeah, kiss your HL2, Prey and FEAR goodbye and get set to play only Halo2.
